Supportive conversations with parents who are using drugs or alcohol.
This training will offer time to reflect and consider best practice when assessing the impact of parent/carer drug and alcohol use on children and young people.
Details
Supporting families often involves a multi-disciplinary approach to help practitioners have meaningful conversations, assess risks, and determine the best support for each family member.
Conversations about drug or alcohol use can be challenging, parents may be reluctant to share, and practitioners may feel uncertain about how to raise the issue or assess its impact on children. This session will help build confidence in exploring these concerns and identify appropriate support.
Outcome
To increase knowledge and understanding of:
- The categories and stages of drug and alcohol use.
- When drug or alcohol use becomes a cause for concern.
- Language considerations when talking about substances.
- How to support children and young people (Hidden Harm).
- Support for the family and the person using drugs or alcohol.
