Involving parents and carers is an essential part of developing an effective and inclusive Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programme. The latest government guidance (2025) requires all schools to consult with parents/carers on what will be taught and how it will be delivered.

Parental engagement is most effective when it happens in stages. A useful starting point is to ensure parents/carers are informed about the key facts and requirements set out in the updated legislation. This can then be followed by gathering feedback, answering questions, and responding to any concerns.

Included in this document is a set of sample questions for parents/carers, which schools and settings can use or adapt to support communication and consultation around RSE. These examples are suitable for secondary schools and settings and can be tailored to fit your context and approach.
