Learn how to access the Early Help support service for drug and alcohol issues, as well as how to use the interactive teaching resource, Oh Lila!

This course will consist of two sessions that complement each other.

The first session will focus on supporting professionals in conversations with families about drugs and alcohol.

In the second session, we will introduce the Oh Lila teaching resource and provide guidance on its effective use in school. This resource is designed to enhance risk awareness and resilience in children and is intended for use in Early Years and Key Stage 1.

Details

Morning Session (Get clued up):

During this session, you will:

    • Receive an introduction to the Early Help Hubs and the role of Substance Use Coordinators.
    • Explore hidden harm and understand the impact of parental substance use on children.
    • Learn about brief interventions and how the Early Help Hubs utilise them. This will include an activity for parents, going through a decisional balance activity.
    • Discuss the cycle of change.
    • Gain insight into having effective conversations, including links to Motivational Interviewing (MI), with a practical example.
    • Discover how to access one-to-one support for parents, as well as professional advice, guidance, and workforce development opportunities from Substance Use Coordinators.


Afternoon Session (Oh Lila teaching resource):

This session will guide you through the interactive teaching resource, Oh Lila, designed for Early Years and Key Stage 1 children. The story aims to foster resilience and protective factors, promoting social support by raising awareness of problem-solving strategies and fostering self-belief.

The Oh Lila resource pack includes a variety of materials based on the characters and themes of the Oh Lila story. It is a flexible and interactive tool that empowers children, helping them seek assistance, identify supportive adults, and develop new skills to enhance their resilience.

Outcome

Morning Session:

    • Gain a better understanding of the substance use support provided by Early Help Hubs.
    • Understand the impact of substance use on the whole family.
    • Increase confidence in initiating conversations with families about substance use.
    • Learn how to access support services.


Afternoon Session:

  • Understand the key themes of Oh Lila.
  • Identify effective ways to use the resource in interactions with children and families.
  • Feel confident in using the resources within your own work environment and managing disclosures.
  • Recognise how the resource can be used flexibly to address various current issues.

    • Please be aware that lunch is not provided at this session. Delegates are, however, welcome to bring their own lunch, or there is a Lidl and a Tesco Express nearby.


Cost: £139 per delegate.

Schools with a current Health & Wellbeing SLA may be entitled to pre-paid places subject to sufficient available training credits.

The full 'pay as you go' price will be applied if you have insufficient training credits.

Please check to see whether your school already has a copy of the Oh Lila resource pack prior to the training. If not, it is available to borrow free of charge from the Public Health Resource Centre. Alternatively, chargeable copies are available directly from Alcohol Focus Scotland.
