Are loan sharks a safeguarding concern for your school.

Loan sharks are illegal money lenders. Their criminal activity can destroy families, pushing them into poverty. The borrower’s debt may spiral out of control, sometimes forcing them to commit crime if they are unable to repay the debt; their tenancy and normal life may also be at risk.

Borrowing a small sum of money can escalate into an excessive amount, with no end to a loan. The effects on the victim, their family and children can be horrific, with some subjected to threats, intimidation and/or violence.

Details

Schools may recognise a loan shark victim but may not know where to access help.

This session will enable you to help young people fully understand the dangers of using illegal money lenders (loan sharks), achieved as part of a wider financial education programme that teaches them about borrowing money safely and managing money effectively.

It will also help to increase your awareness and understanding of illegal money lending and its impacts.

During the session you will receive a Financial Education Pack, produced by the England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT), approved by Young Money, for use with pupils aged 5-11, and 11-19.

The pack includes age-appropriate activities, designed to build children and young people’s knowledge and understanding of handling money; helping them to make choices and pay for the things they need and want.

The activities can be delivered in different areas of the curriculum and build on many of the core learning objectives in the Young Money financial education planning framework.

Outcome

Increased awareness of the issue and prevalence of illegal lending.
