SEMH Subject Leader Day: Mental Health & The Online World

This Subject Leader Day will present the foundations for conducting well-planned transitions that aim to remove barriers to learning and enable every student to reach their potential. The day will feature case studies from schools, resource packs of ideas and networking opportunities between primary and secondary settings, creating more opportunities to work together.

School-aged children and young people are at a phase of great transition in their lives, whether transitioning year groups, the transition from primary to secondary or even the dramatic transitions their bodies go through during puberty. Transition can cause great anxiety; the way that key transitional stages are dealt with in school can dramatically effect pupils mental health and ability to engage with school life. For example, the transition between primary and secondary school is widely recognised as a stressful and difficult time for pupils (Zeedyk et al, 2003, Jindal-Snape & Foggie, 2008, Howard & Johnson). It can also be a valuable learning experience, enabling pupils to become more resilient to change and, if managed well, build their self-esteem and confidence (Lucey & Reay, 2000).

The aim of the day is to present a range of interventions that could help ease the severity of these transitions, using them as opportunities to develop a whole-school approach to SEMH and build confidence and resilience to change.
To ensure school staff feel supported to aid key transitional stages confidently with a focus on SEMH, facilitating strong links between schools, presenting a wide range of initiatives and signposting local services that are here to support them.
