18 January 2023 12:30 | Course type: Half day | Audience: Primary schools and settings, PSHE leaders, KS2 teachers, Healthy Schools coordinators, RSE coordinators, Safeguarding lead, Senior leadership team.

Increase your confidence, gain a set of 3 lessons plans and lesson PowerPoints to use in school.

This course is available to all PSHE leads and teachers delivering FGM lessons in Key Stage 2, as part of their wider PSHE and safeguarding curriculum. This session will focus specifically on how to teach FGM in the classroom rather than the background to the issue.

As part of the training you will receive a set of three lessons plans and lesson PowerPoints to use in your school. This will be a hands-on training session where you will have the opportunity to trial some of the activities from the lesson plans.

Given the importance of teachers’ roles, and the sensitivity of this subject area, there is an expectation that all delegates will have undertaken prior training on FGM through the child protection and safeguarding team - you need a good understanding of the issues, and know your own professional and legal responsibilities in recognising and responding to FGM, in order to teach about the subject.

If you have not had training around FGM previously, the Leeds Child Protection and Safeguarding Team deliver FGM training for schools - these courses can be booked via Leeds for Learning, or for more information please contact educ.childprotection@leeds.gov.uk.

Details

Schools play a vital role in protecting and supporting girls at risk of, or affected by FGM. From the 31st October 2015, teachers in England and Wales have a duty to report 'known' cases of FGM in under 18's, which they identify in the course of their professional work, to the police.

The Health and Wellbeing Service have created a set of three FGM lesson plans, aimed at KS2 boys and girls. The lessons provide an opportunity to explore the issue of FGM in a safe, gentle, age-appropriate and culturally sensitive way in the context of who to go to for help, rules and laws, human rights and bodily integrity. Children will learn about the issue in a safe, comfortable space and will be empowered to seek support if they are concerned about their own, or a friend’s, health and wellbeing. The training makes links with, and supports, the statutory guidance for Health and Relationships Education.
